Mojo's Musings

Woof! Mojo here. My favorite part of autumn isn't just the crunchy leaves—it's the amazing smells coming from the kitchen! This is the season of cozy sweaters, warm drinks, and delicious, hearty food. My humans love to cook with all the amazing things the harvest brings, like pumpkin and apples, and my official job is to be the Head Taste Tester.

Today, I'm sharing a secret from my recipe box: a couple of simple, delicious, and healthy fall recipes—one for your pup, and one for you to share (or not!). So, put on your apron, and let's get cooking!

The ultimate test of patience! These two good pups are waiting (very) patiently for their human to whip up some deliciousness. Who else has kitchen supervisors this dedicated? 🐶❤️

Mojo's Munchies: Savory Salmon & Sweet Potato Biscuits

Alright, listen up, this is the main event. Forget the human food; this is the recipe for the treasure that's truly worth guarding. My humans whip these up, and the smell that fills the kitchen is enough to make a pup dream of counter-surfing. They're packed with good stuff for a shiny coat and a happy belly, and they earn a 10/10 on the "snoot-boops for more" scale.

What You'll Need (The Booty):

  • 1 can (15 oz) of salmon, drained (The good, stinky stuff!)

  • 1 medium sweet potato, cooked and mashed (about 1 cup)

  • 2 eggs (My humans call them "cackleberries")

  • 1/3 cup of coconut flour (or oat flour)

  • A sprinkle of dried parsley (This is for fancy-pants pups)

A Note from the Humans: This recipe is completely Ovo-Pescatarian and made with 100% human-grade ingredients. That's right—they're so healthy and natural that you can even sneak a bite yourself! (Though Mojo prefers you don't.)

Yield: This recipe makes approximately 2-3 dozen biscuits, depending on the size of your cookie cutter.

Disclaimer: These are intended as a special treat for your pup. Please consult with your veterinarian about your dog's specific dietary needs and any potential allergies.

The Captain's Orders (Instructions):

  1. Get your humans to fire up the big heat-box (oven) to 350°F (175°C).

  2. In a big bowl, have them mash up the salmon. This is a very important step that requires intense, close-up supervision from the floor.

  3. Add in the sweet potato and eggs. As they mix, this is a good time to offer a few encouraging tail wags to speed up the process.

  4. Slowly add the flour and parsley until it becomes a doughy blob of pure potential.

  5. On a floured surface, they'll roll it all out. Now for the fun part: use a cool cookie cutter to make fun shapes! I'm partial to the classic bone.

  6. Pop 'em in the oven for 20-25 minutes. You'll know they're done when your nose tells you that paradise is imminent.

  7. Let them cool completely! This is the ultimate test of a pup's patience, but it's worth the wait.

Store these fishy treasures in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week. Enjoy!

The Chef's Treat: Hearty Butternut Squash & Sage Risotto

Alright, now that my treats are safely cooling on the counter, it's time to make something for the tall person who has the thumbs. This is their version of a super-fancy, high-value treat. I know it's good because they make funny "yummy" noises when they eat it, and sometimes, if I sit in the perfect begging position, a little piece of the roasted squash "accidentally" falls on the floor.

What They'll Need (The Human's Booty):

  • 1 medium butternut squash (the weird, bell-shaped orange thing)

  • A splash of olive oil

  • 6 cups of vegetable broth

  • 4 tbsp of that creamy oat butter stuff

  • 1 shallot (a fancy little onion)

  • 2 cloves of garlic (the best smelling part!)

  • 1.5 cups of Arborio rice

  • A glug of dry white wine (for the humans only!)

  • Some fresh sage from the garden

  • A pile of grated vegan Parmesan cheese

  • Salt, pepper, and maybe some toasted pumpkin seeds for crunchies

A Note from the Humans: This recipe is completely Ovo-Pescatarian and, as written with the oat butter and vegan parmesan, is also fully vegan and dairy-free. It's a wonderful, plant-based meal for a cozy autumn night.

Yield: This recipe makes enough for 4-6 main course servings.

The Human's Orders (Instructions):

  1. Roast the Squash: Get your human to chop up the squash, toss it with oil, and put it in the hot box (oven) at 400°F. They'll know it's done in about 20 minutes when it's soft and smells amazing.

  2. Warm the Broth: They need to warm up the veggie broth in a separate pot. I'm not sure why, but it's a very important step, apparently.

  3. Do the Sizzly Stuff: In a big pot, they'll melt some of the oat butter and cook the fancy onion, garlic, and sage. This is the part where I usually come into the kitchen to "supervise."

  4. Toast the Rice: They'll dump in the rice and stir it around. This is a noisy, interesting part of the process.

  5. Add the Glug: The wine goes in! It makes a big "hissing" sound and then disappears. Very mysterious.

  6. The Long Stir: Now comes the boring part. They have to stand there and stir for, like, a million years, adding a little bit of the warm broth at a time. This is a good time to practice my "sad, hungry eyes" look.

  7. Mix it All Up: Finally, they stir in the roasted squash, the rest of the butter, and the vegan cheese.

  8. Serve! They'll put it in a bowl and maybe add some crunchy seeds. I'll be waiting patiently nearby for any "accidents."
