Ready for adventure! Where will the open road take us today?
Woof! Mojo here. There are a few magic words in my house. "Treat" is a big one. "Walk" is a classic. But my absolute favorite? "Wanna go for a ride?" The jingle of car keys is the most beautiful music in the world! There's nothing better than hopping in the car, sticking my head out the window (safely, of course!), and letting all the amazing smells of the world fly by. A car ride isn't just a way to get from here to there; it's a mini-adventure, a bonding moment, and the ultimate mood booster. So, buckle up, my friends! I'm sharing my guide to making every car ride the best ride ever.

It doesn't matter if the trip is just to the corner store or all the way to the ocean. The best adventures are the ones I get to take with my favorite people.
Okay, let's get one thing straight. The absolute best part of a car ride is sticking your head out the window. It's a glorious, full-body sniffing experience that I give 12/10 stars. But my humans have some very important rules about it, and all our other car adventures, to make sure every trip is a safe one.
This is the serious stuff, my pack, so listen up!
Buckle Up! My humans say a loose dog in a car is a major distraction and can be very dangerous in a sudden stop. I'm not allowed to just roam free. The best and safest options are a comfy, crash-tested car harness that clips into the seatbelt, a secure travel crate, or a booster seat for the little guys.
The "Head Out the Window" Rule: I get to do this, but only when we're driving slowly on our street, and my human is watching me carefully. At high speeds, stuff can fly into your eyes and ears (ouch!), and it's not safe. A good compromise is to just crack the window enough for my super-sniffer to get all the good smells without me sticking my whole head out.
Backseat is Best: The front seat can be a dangerous place because of airbags. The safest spot for any pup, big or small, is the back seat. I call it the "VIP Lounge."
Never, Ever Leave a Pup in a Parked Car: My humans are VERY serious about this one. A car can get dangerously hot in just a few minutes, even on a cloudy day. If they're going somewhere I'm not allowed, I just stay home where it's safe and cool.
"I saw in their eyes something I was to see over and over in every part of the nation—a burning desire to go, to move, to get under way, anyplace, away from any Here."
✅ DO!
🚫 DON'T!
As we talked about in a recent post on Mojo's Minutiae, singing to your dog is one of the best ways to show them you love them. And what's the one place where every human feels like a rock star? The car! It's a private concert hall on wheels.
Putting on some feel-good music and singing along (even if you're off-key!) makes any trip, long or short, a thousand times better. It tells me that my human is happy, and that makes me happy. To help you get started, I've curated the perfect set of tunes for your next journey.
What's a road trip without the perfect tunes? I've put my paws to the test and curated the ultimate "windows-down" mixtape for your next journey. It's packed with feel-good songs that are perfect for singing along to at the top of your lungs. This is the official soundtrack for making memories on the open road with your best co-pilot!
The best part about a car ride is that it can be any kind of adventure. It can be a short, exciting trip to the coffee shop for a "pup cup," a journey to the farmer's market to sniff out the best treats, or a big adventure to the mountains for a beautiful hike.
But sometimes, a car ride is more than just a trip.
After my human has been away for a few days on a boring "business trip," the first car ride we take together is the most important one. It's our time to reconnect. It's the moment that washes away that guilty feeling they have for leaving and replaces it with the pure joy of being together again, with the windows down and a new adventure ahead. It's the anytime, everyday event that reminds us we're a pack.
"Happiness is a car, the open road, and a best friend with paws."
Every great co-pilot needs the right gear for the mission! Before we hit the road, my humans always pack my adventure bag with a few non-negotiable essentials to keep me safe, happy, and hydrated.
Safety first! I never leave the house without my Visible ID Bandana. It's comfy, stylish, and has my human's phone number right on it, which is the most important piece of gear for any trip away from home.
My humans always pack my Stainless Steel Water Bottle with fresh, cool water. It's the perfect way to make sure I don't get thirsty on the road, especially if we're heading somewhere fun like a hiking trail.
All my important stuff—the water bottle, my favorite monkey toy, and a bag of high-value snacks—gets packed in one of our adventure-ready bags. For a day trip to the park, the Large Gusseted Tote Bag is perfect. For a bigger adventure, my humans grab the Weekender Bag! They are the official go-bags for every journey.
Look, I've logged thousands of miles in the backseat (the VIP lounge, as I call it). I'm an expert in the physics of a flapping jowl in the wind and the subtle art of looking pathetic enough at a drive-thru to secure a bonus snack. I have my PhD in sniffing out the best rest stops.
More importantly, my humans are obsessed with safety and making sure every adventure is a happy one. All the tips and tricks in this guide come from our real-world experience on the open road. We only share the advice that we know works to keep tails wagging for the whole trip!

That's a tough one! The key is to build a positive association. Start with super short, happy trips that don't end at the vet. A 5-minute ride that ends at the dog park with a high-value treat is a huge win. Work your way up from there. A comfy, familiar blanket and a favorite toy in their car seat can also help a lot!
I know, I know, it's the BEST. But my humans are right—it can be dangerous at high speeds. Debris from the road can get in our eyes and ears. The safest bet is to crack the window just enough for our super-sniffers to get all the amazing smells without putting our heads in the danger zone.
Ugh, the worst. A few things help: facing forward (a good car seat or harness helps with this), keeping the car cool with good air circulation, and avoiding a big meal right before you leave. If it's a big problem, your vet can also recommend some safe, pup-friendly remedies!
Safety First: Always use a proper restraint like a car harness or a secure crate.
Positive Vibes: Start with short, fun trips to build a positive association with the car.
Pack the Essentials: Don't forget fresh water, a bowl, and a favorite toy. A Visible ID Bandana is a must-have for any trip.
Fresh Air, Safely: Crack the windows to let your pup enjoy the smells without the risk of putting their full head out at high speeds.
Take Breaks: Plan for a quick potty and stretch break every couple of hours on long journeys.
"The best co-pilots don't need a map; they just need an open window and a happy human."
A car ride is one of the simple, happy things that makes life with a dog so special. It’s a mini-adventure, a chance to bond, and a front-row seat to the best smells in the world. With a little bit of prep to keep things safe and comfortable, every trip can be a tail-wagging success. So grab the keys, call out that magic phrase—"Wanna go for a ride?"—and get ready to make some memories.
Wags and wiggles,
Mojo (and the Doggo Mojo Team!)
